Photoselective vaporization of prostate for treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia

Abstract

Objective To study the method of photoselective vaporization of prostate (PVP) for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and evaluate its efficacy.Methods A total of 180 patients with symptomatic bladder outlet obstruction due to BPH underwent PVP with Niagara via transwrethral PVTM system.ALL patients were under epidural anesthesia.The average power was 80 W,the mean operative time was 42.5±19.4 min,and the post-operative catheterization time was 1~5 days.Results The PVP was successfully performed on all the 180 patients with BPH.All cases were followed up 3 to 6 months after treatment.Qmax,IPSS and BRU in the treatment group after operation was significantly improved as compared with those before operation(P0.05).Postoperatively 18 cases had transient dysuria and 3 experienced delayed hematuria.Conclusion The PVP is an excellent treatment modality for BPH.It can yield rapid,safe and effective relief for patients with BPH with minimal invasion.
