Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changing rate of maternal mortality and the causes of maternal deaths during the past 47 years(1958-2004) and to figure out the appropriate prevention and intervention to reduce the rate. Methods:The data of maternal deaths in my hospital from Jan. 1958 to Sep. 2004 were analysed retrospectively. Results: There were total 252062 numbers of live births in this peried. There were 43 maternal deaths and the overall average maternal mortality of the past 47 years was 184.72 per 100 000 deliveries. The maternal mortality rate was decreasing from 420.65 per 100 000 deliveries in 1958-1960 to 0 per 100 000 in 2001-2004. The leading cause of maternal mortality was amniotic fluid embolism. The second cause of maternal mortality was obstetric hemorrhage, heart diseases complicated pregnancy, pre-eclampsia eclampsia. Conclusion: Amniotic fluid embolism is the most dangerous diseases during delivery. It shouldn't be neglected to reduce the rate of maternal mortality is that prevent and pay attention to amniotic fluid embolism.
