STUDY ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LIFE EVENTS AND SUICIDAL IDEATION AMONG UNDERGRADUATES IN GUANGZHOU

[Objective] To evaluate the relationship between life events and suicidal ideation among undergraduates,to make recommendations to prevent suicide.[Methods] Eight hundred and eighty-five students were investigated with stratified cluster random sampling.Factors associated with suicidal ideation were analyzed with nonparametric tests and logistic regression.[Results] The prevalence rate of suicidal ideation among the undergraduates in a recent week was 7.4%.The major sources of pressure on undergraduates included study pressure,human relationship and setback factors.The average scores of life events of undergraduates with suicidal ideation were higher than those without suicidal ideation.The results showed that the major risk factors for suicidal ideations were having no interest in major(OR=1.257),having contradictions with classmates(OR=1.322) and losing or beening stolen money(OR=1.470),while the protective factor was having good relationship with classmate(OR= 0.701) by multiple logistic regression analysis.[Conclusion] According to the impact which life events have on suicidal ideation,reducing the incidence of life events or mitigating its impact and making psychological education or counseling should be carried on to prevent suicide ideation and suicide behavior among undergraduates.
