Abstract

The preferred orientations of aragonite crystals in nacre of shells are considered to be one of the most important reasons responsible for the high mechanical performance of nacre.X ray diffraction analysis shows that,in nacre of Hyriopsis cumingii( Lea),there exist two kinds of orientation of aragonite crystals. The first is the axis of aragonite perpendicular to nacreous layers and the second is axis perpendicular to nacreous layers. The preferred orientation degree of the and varies with the structural positions of a shell. In conclusion, structure of nacre in shell of Hyriopsis cumingii( Lea)is very inhomogeneous.
