In modern Britain, there was an increase in the rate of the public literacy; there was an improvement of the literacy of the common people. The investigation of the presswork market and the status of the public reading showed that the presswork market expanded rapidly; the reading activities that had been limited to the priest and the upper class were spreading and were becoming a part of the cultural life of the general public.
