Abstract

Objective To investigate the relationship between neck artery atherosclerosis and transient ischemic attack(TIA).Methods Color Doppler ultrasonography was used in 168 patients with TIA.Results Intima media thickness(IMT) of carotid arteries was higher in patients with TIA than in control group. The rates of arterioclerotic plaques of carotid arteries were increased significantly in patients with TIA than in controls. The arterioclerotic plaques were mainly found at the beginning of subclavian artery in vertebrobasilar TIA than in carotid TIA.A significant positive correlation between the IMT of internal carotid artery and the concentration of blood total cholesterol, triglyceride, fibrinogen, respectively. Conclusions Color Doppler ultrasonography is a reliable technique to evaluate the arterioclerotic plaques of neck arteries. There is a significant correlation between neck artery atherosclerosis and TIA.
