Abstract
In 1935,the Shanghai branch of Kuomintang ordered Lu Si- mian to modify his textbook General History of China( Vernacular Chinese Edition),which was believed to slander Yue Fei and praise Qin Hui. Someone hence charged the Commercial Press and Lu Si- mian but the court didn't accept the case. In this book, the description of Yue Fei was adverse to arouse national consciousness to resist the Japanese invasion during the national crisis. However, its anti- warlordism was conducive to strengthen the national unity, which was just demanded by Nanjing National Government. It was the government's handling of the affair that reflected the government's measurement of the national hero. On one hand,it honored Yue Fei as a national hero and highlighted his achievement in defending against enemies,in order to use his anti- Jin image to encourage people. On the other hand, the government worried his influence on the warlords. So it limited the description to stories about his deeds of resisting the Jin Dynasty and reduced to mention his identity as a general,so as to strengthen the national unity.
