Abstract

Zhang Xuecheng regards the Spring and Autumn Annals(chunqiu) as his model of ancient prose(guwen).He tries his best to advocate ancient after 1789.This paper analyses Zhang's new understanding of studies of the Spring and Autumn Annals by re-reading his Morality of historiography(Shi De).distinguishes prose of from prose of literature.He develops his point of view on ancient prose(guwen) in his articles after 1789.Zhang's criticism on Han Yu represents his special concern about the writing of contemporary history.
