Abstract

Mordern theory of knowledge, especially the certainty of knowledge of the external world, has been under the great challenge from scepticism from its very beginning. Wittgen- stein, while rejecting both scepticism and Moore's arguments against sceptic, was able to pre- sent a different refutation of sceptical position and a new way of understanding certainty. The present paper is a further study on Wittgenstein's On Certainty. It tries to make the signifi- cance of the arguments clear by reviewing the historical background of the arguments, to give prominence to the key points of the arguments,to expound and evaluate Wittgenstein's new way of understanding certainty, and to draw inspirations from it.
