Abstract
Objective To investigate serum procalcitonin (PCT) in patients with meningitis. Methods Procalcitonin of 54 patients with meningitis were measured with an immunoluminometric assay. Results Very high levels of PCT correlated with bacterial meningitis, and during antibiotic therapy,PCT decreased rapidly and reached normal levels after recovery. But the PCT levels were low in patients with viral meningitis (P0.001).Conclusion The measurement of serum PCT may be of value in the differential diagnosis of meningitis due to either bacteria or viruses.
