Abstract

Artificial liver support system is a technical method to support liver function for liver falure patients.Non-bioarticifical liver(NBAL) have limitations in improving the survival rates.Biological artificial liver(BAL) is based on isolated hepatocytes as a detoxification system, which can effectively replace the detoxicating and synthetic functions of liver, and prevent hepatic encephalopathy, coma and cerebral edema, and serves as the treatment of bridge to liver transplantation or to promote spontaneous liver regeneration. The key components of biological artificial livers are cell sources, cell culture and bioreactor. This review focus on research progress and prospects of bioartificial liver system.Although the bioartificail liver research has made significant progress,it still faces the problems such as limited liver sources,long-term mainetenance of liver cell activity and function, and further optimization of the reactor design.
