Abstract

Here,by fundamental hydraulic computation and combining with a hydraulic engineering of overflow dam,the hydraulic elements of the downstream stilling basin among overflow dams with both general and optimized shape are analyzed and compared under the case of energy dissipation by hydraulic jump and forming the stilling basin by lowering the elevation of the apron. The computing results indicate that the length and depth of the stilling basin would decrease remarkably after optimizing the shape of the overflow dam, which would lead to save the engineering investment a lot by greatly reducing the the concrete dosage used in the dam body and the excavation volume of the stilling basin. The hydraulic model test shows that the flow regime in the optimized stilling basin is fine, and the experimental results could coincide with the computing results preferably.
