Expression Level of Serum IL-6 in Septic Patients

Abstract

Objective To investigate the expression level of serum IL-6 septic patients.Methods A total of 99 septic patients including 16 patients with multiple organ dysfunction syndrome(MODS)(MODS group)and 83 patients without MODS(non-MODS group)were included in this study.In addition,according to the outcomes,they were also divided into survival group(n=94)and death group(n=5).In addition,21 normal controls were enrolled(control group).The serum IL-6 level was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA).Results Serum IL-6 significantly increased in sepsis group than in control group at admission and 1,3,5,and 7 days after admission(all P0.05).The expression of IL-6 level was significantly higher in MODS group than in non-MODS group 3,5,7,and 14 days after admission(all P0.05),and was significantly higher in death group than in survival group 5,7,and 14 days after admission(all P0.05).Conclusion IL-6 can maintain a persistent and high expression in the serum of critically ill patients.It can as a sensitive indicator for predicting the severity and prognosis of sepsis and MODS.
