Abstract

Like other fuel cells, the proton exchange membrane fuel cell produces electric power by redox reaction without combustion. It uses hydrogen as fuel and oxygen as the oxidant and therefore produces little emissions to the environment. Due to its high efficiency and low emission, the proton exchange membrane fuel cell and its application have been holding interest of the industry. In this paper, the principle of operation of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell was depicted, and a comparison of engineering data between PEMFC and other fuel cells was made. Furthermore, the major problems which will be encountered in the commercialization of PEMFC were discussed.
