Abstract
In recent years,as an effective teaching approach to developing language learners' linguistic knowledge in the communicative contexts,focus on form is gaining increasing attention in the field of applied linguistics at home and abroad.This paper discusses the theoretical foundation of this approach based on the contrastive analysis of the three related teaching approaches: namely,focus on forms,focus on meaning and focus on form in terms of their teaching results,briefly illustrates its application in EFL/ESL teaching practice and puts forward the corresponding views aiming at the relative comments by some scholars on this approach.It is pointed out that more researches,especially the empirical researches concerning focus on form in the Chinese EFL teaching contexts is necessary and urgent.
