Abstract

Aim To improve the water tolerance and low temperature resistance of polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) emulsion. Method Vinyl acetate, butyl acrylate and acrylic acid were polymerized with polymerization of seeding emulsion, the water tolerance of PVAc adhesive was improved, and the structure of copolymer was analyzed with IR spectrum. Results The optimal reaction conditions: the polymerization temperature is between 70 ℃ and 75 ℃, pH =6~7, the polymerizing reaction time 2.5~3 h, the ratio of vinyl acetate, acrylic acid and butyl acrylate is 10∶0.7∶1.5, the amount of initiator is 0.1% ~0.5%, the amount of emulsifier is 1%~5% of the monomer, the solid containing is more than 40% in the emulsion, the viscosity is more than 800 mPa · s, the film of the emulsion can be formed at room temperature, and the binding strength is very satisfying and the water tolerance is 8 times of that of homopoly vinyl acetate. Conclusion The water tolerance of PVAc adhesive is improved distinctly through ternary polymerization of vinyl acetate-butyl acrylate-acrylic acid.
