Abstract
A novel monolithic LC voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) in new configuration is studied. In the design of VCO, the tuning range circuit is proposed on the basis of traditional circuit architecture, which efficiently reduces phase noise under the condition of sufficient tuning range. By using the high Q on-chip spiral inductors and with SMIC 0.18μm 1P6M mixed-signal CMOS technology, VCO is implemented. Simulation results show that, with tuning range in the same circumstances, the new type VCO has an improved phase noise of 16.25 dB@ 1 kHz or 8.08 dB@100 kHz as compared with the traditional circuit. With 1.8 GHz center frequency, VCO operates under the supply voltage of 1.8 V and consumes 3 mA of current.
