Abstract
Objective To evaluate the morphology of canals in mandibular second molars by cone-beam computed tomography( CBCT). Methods CBCT images of 700 mandibular second molars were collected. The number of roots and canals,the canal configuration( according to Weine's criteria),and the incidence of the C-shaped canals was recorded.Results Thirty-six percent of the mandibular second molars were C-shaped root. In the two-root samples,61. 1% of the mesial root canals were of type 1- 2,and 96. 1% of the distal root canals were of type 1- 1. The patterns of C-shaped canals varied a lot. Conclusion The root and canal of the mandibular second molars vary greatly in their anatomical configurations. The application of CBCT can help to facilitate root canal treatment.
