Abstract
Girdling was made of the tobacco plants 1, 2 and 3 weeks after topping. Nicotine content in the upper leaves of the plants increased with the postponing of harvest, but it decreased from 5.07% in the non-girdled control to 4.23%, 4.33% and 4.69%, respectively, in the three girdling treatments. Girdling improved the N/C or soluble sugar/nicotine or soluble sugar/protein ratios in the upper leaves and enhanced their grade in smoking evaluation. Girdling made 1 week after topping appeared to be optimum for the improvement of the quality of the upper leaves.
