Abstract
Objective In order to investigate the relationship between the expression of Ki 67 and p16 in gastrointestinal smooth muscle tumors (GISMT) and the clinical pathological implications. Methods Expression of Ki 67 and p16 in 86 cases of GISMT were detected by using microwave antigen retrieval in formalin fixed tissues and the immunohistochemical staining S P method, and the immunohistochemical staining S P method, respectively. Results The expression of Ki 67 was increased significantly in the following order: leiomyomas, grade Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ (P0.01), but the expression of p16 decreased accordingly (P0.05). Meantime, the expression of Ki 67 and p16 was associated with the tumors with or without continuous organ invasion or distant metastasis, the size of tumors, the tumors with or without center necrosis (P0.01). The 5 year survival rate was significantly higher in patients with p16 positive expression than those with p16 negative expression (P0.05). Conclusion The expressive tendency of Ki 67 and p16 in GISMT is opposite. Ki 67 and p16 could be used as the parameters in distinguishing malignant from benign tumors, judging the malignant degree and predicting the prognosis of the patients with GISMT.
