Abstract

Objective To study the influence of segmental artery block on its intimal hyperplasia. Methods Sixteen mongrel dogs were randomly divided into 4 groups: the right common carotid artery was mobilized and clamped 2.0 cm proximal and distal to the cricoid cartilage for 0, 15, 30 and 60 min respectively. Specimens were harvested 4 weeks later for microscopic examination and the pictures were analyzed by computer. Results Neointimal formation was absent in the group of blockage for 15 min, but present in groups of blockage for 30 and 60 min. The degree of intimal hyperplasia in 60 min group was more obvious than that of 30 min group. Cells made up the major component of neointima in 60 min group but extracellular matrix in 30 min group. Conclusion Segmental artery block during operation may result in intimal hyperplasia. The appropriate block duration was 15 min approximately, never beyond 30 min.\;
