Abstract
Aim: To investigate the relationship between the expressions of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF-C), its receptor-3 (VEGFR-3) and lymphangiogenesis in human esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) tissue. Methods: Expressions of VEGF-C and VEGFR-3 in 59 cases of ESCC were detected by immunohistochemical SP method and lymphatic vessel density (LVD) was calculated. Integral optical density (IOD) was determined by image analysis system. There were 22 cases of grade Ⅰ, 20 cases of grade Ⅱ, and 17 cases of grade Ⅲ , respectively, and 47 cases were with lymph node metastasis. Results: The expression of VEGF-C and VEGFR-3 was correlated with lymph node metastasis (P0.05), but not correlated with patient sex and pathological grade(P0.05). The expression of VEGF-C was correlated with that of VEGFR-3 (P0.05); LVD and IOD in carcinoma and pericarcinoma tissue were correlated with lymph node metastasis (P0.01).Conclusion: The expression of VEGF-C and VEGFR-3 in ESCC tissue might play a role in lymphatic metastasis via lymphangiogenesis.
