Abstract

Objective:To study the relationship between mean corpuscular volume(MCV),mean corpuscular hemoglobin(MCH) of umbilical blood and thalassemia. Methods:MCV and MCH,Hb Bart's and alpha thalassemia 1 gene were determined by automatic analyzer, electrophoresis and gap PCR respectively in 35 neonates with thalassemia and 46 normal newborns. Results:MCV and MCH in patients were significantly lower than those in normal controls( P 0.01).Conclusion:MCV and MCH of umbilical blood might be important clues to the diagnosis of thalassemia.
