Abstract

The effect of surface nanocrystallization on oxidation resistance of 1Cr17 stainless steel was investigated by TGA,XRD, SEM with EDX.The oxidation dynamics showed that at the initial oxidation stage the oxidation rate of the nanocrystallized surface is higher than that of the untreated surface,and almost the same as that of the traditional shot-peened surface.But after about 2 hours later the passivation occurs,and the oxidation rate is much lower than that of the untreated and the traditional shot peened.The (FeCr)203 formed on the surface of all samples in the oxidation process,but the boundaries high in density in the surface nanocrystallization samples provide fast diffusion paths for Cr atoms,which promoted the Cr content in (FeCr)_2O_3 increased quickly. Therefore the dense Cr_2O_3 layer formed,and the oxidation resistance increase.
