Abstract

Objective To understand the anxiety and depression of patients with functional gastrointestinal disorder(FGID)Methods Self-rating Depression Scale(SDS) and Self-rating Anxiety Scale(SAS) were applied to investigate 446 patients with functional dyspepsia(FD), 115 patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD) and 69 patients with functional constipation. Results Anxiety was found among 33.2% of the FD patients, depression among 45.3% of them and 25.6% of the patients suffered from anxiety and depression. Of GERD patients, 27.8% of them had anxiety, 44.3% depression and 21.7% of them both anxiety and depression. For patients with functional constipation, 36.2% of them had anxiety, 66.7% depression and 30.4% anxiety and depression.FGID patients with different gender and age showed no statistical difference in anxiety and depression(P0.05) and the highest positive rate of anxiety and depression was found among patients only completing primary school education or those having no education(P0.01 or P0.05). Conclusion totally 1/3 of the patients suffer from anxiety, nearly 1/2 of them depression and 1/4 of them both anxiety and depression. The highest positive rate is found among those with less education, which indicates psychological detection is necessary for them. Psychological treatment such as anti-anxiety and anti-depression treatment plays a critical role for FGID patients with psychological disorders.
