Abstract
The effect of flow controlling devices on the fluid flow characteristics of a four-strand trapeze tundish for bloom continuous casting in Nanjing Steel Plant has been investigated by using methods of numerical simulation and water model experiment.The results showed that appreciable volume of dead zone existed in the tundish,with large difference in the Residence Time Distribution (RTD) curves between the two outlets (such as strand 1 and strand 2) on the same side of impact zone under the elongated nozzle,and short circuit flow existed in strand 2 and strand 3 near the impact zone.The installation of combined flow controlling devices effectively improved the flow pattern in tundish, modified distribution of the molten steel among the strands,prolonged the average residence time,increased plug flow volume and decreased dead volume,and the optimum inner configuration has been considered to be the combination of turbulence inhibitor + baffle + dam,which contributes to obtain stable operation conditions and improve the quality of the bloom.
