Abstract

Chitosan grafted acrylic acid and acrylamide superabsorbent (CPAAM) was prepared by the solution polymerization of chitosan, acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AM) using potassium persulfate (KPS) as the initiator and N,N'-methylene-bisacrylamide (NMBA) as the crosslinker. The optimal reaction conditions were obtained on the basis of the absorbency of the CPAAM.The mass concentration of monomers was 8.6%.The mass ratio of CTS to monomers was 1:6.The mass concentrations of the initiator and the crosslinker were 2.5% and 0.16%,respectively.The reaction temperature and time were 60℃ and 5 h,respectively. The CPAAM synthesized under the optimal conditions has water-absorption capacities of 1 315 g /g in distilled water and 66 g /g in 0.9 % NaCl aqueous solution.
