Abstract

It discusses the issues of a regulated discharge,confinement of flow for sediment transport and river training of the lower Yellow River and considers that to fully utilize the natural characteristic of potentiality of sediment transport and flood discharge capacity of narrow and deep channel of the Yellow River during flood season will be the main direction of attack for harnessing the lower channel;among each measure of retention,regulation,warping,sluicing and excavation,regulation is the key measure.The main task of a regulated discharge conducted by the Xiaolangdi Reservoir is to regulate and transport sediment during flood season of a wet year.The task of river training is to prevent clear water scouring and channel widening,stabilize the main channel,control river regime,increase the efficiency of sediment transport of meandering channel and form a straight and smooth channel of sluicing and sediment transport through both-side bank regulation.Mutual cooperation of sediment transport by floods,long-period storage reservoir and confinement of flow is an essential condition for achieving no increase of the lower channel of the Yellow River.
