Abstract
Laser induced phase transformation hardening was applied on 40Cr steel with a no-helium crossflow CO_2 laser processing machine, and the microstructure and property of hardened layers were investigated by means of metallurgical microscope, microhardness tester, sliding friction wear tester and potentiostat. Results indicated that the hardened region consisted of fine acicular martensites and retained austenites, and the transition region consisted of tempered martensites, retained austenites, ferrites and carbides. The hardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance of the hardened 40Cr steel were all improved.
