Abstract
An overview of space environment is presented with attention to the erosion effect of atomic oxygen on materials.Particular emphasis is given to protective mechanisms for atomic oxygen-susceptible materials and development of atomic oxygen-resistant materials for low earth orbit environment spacecraft applications in this paper,which include the surface modification of space materials,thin films and coatings in space.
