Diagnostic Value for Carotid Body Tumor by Multi-slice Spiral CT and CT Angiography

Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate MSCT and MSCTA in the diagnoses of Carotid body tumor.Materials and Methods: The MSCT imaging data were retrospectively analyzed in 7 cases with carotid body tumor proved pathologically.Results: There were 9 masses in 7 cases of which 2 were bilateral involved.On non-contrast CT,the density of the masses was similar to that of muscle.All masses were enhanced obviously after contrast media administration.The transverse planes with thin slice showed the pushed or circumscribed internal and external carotid arteries and widened distance between the internal and external carotid arteries clearly.Multi-dilated supplying arteries were displayed around 8 masses.The cervical CTA displayed the relation between 9 masses and carotid artery /the internal and external carotid arteries in 7 cases clearly.Among the 9 masses,the bifurcations of carotid artery in the involved sides dilated like mouths of cups in 7 masses.Results of CTA were identical to that of DSA in 3 cases.Conclusion: MSCT combining with cervical MSCTA could serve as the best imaging method instead of DSA for diagnosing carotid body tumor.
