Abstract
Objective To investigate the clinicopathologic factors related to the prognosis of colorectal cancer with liver metastases. Methods The clinicopathologic factors of 92 colorectal cancer patients with synchronous liver metastases initially, who were treated at the First Hospital of China Medical University and Shenzhou Hospital of Shenyang Medical College from January 1998 to January 2003,were analyzed retrospectively. The prognostic index(PI) of patients was calculated based on the results of multivariate analysis. The patients were classified into a high risk group,a moderate risk group, and a low risk group according to the PI value. The survival curves was made according to the PI value. Results Univariate analysis revealed that tumor cell differentiation, resection of primary tumor, resection of liver metastasis, number of liver metastases and preoperative CEA concentration were associated with prognosis(P0.05).Multivariate analysis showed that the resection of liver metastases, numbers of liver metastases and preoperative CEA concentration were 3 independent prognostic factors. There was significant difference in the survival rate among the 3 groups(P0.05).Conclusion The primary tumor of colorectal cancer patients should be resected together with the resectable liver metastasis. Moreover,PI valve is useful in predicting the prognosis for patients of colorectal cancer with liver metastases, and may provide the valuable information in the individualized treatment.
