Abstract
According to the principle of modular design, the paper analyzes the abstract representation of a machine tool system from the viewpoint of virtual manufacturing. The interrelations between constraints of virtual machine tool design are defined. On the basis, a structural model for virtual machine tool is built. Some research fields on virtual machine tool are discussed.
