Abstract
The assumptions regarding inter-slice forces used in the common limit equilibrium methods of slice such as Sweden method,Bishop method and unbalanced thrust force transferring method are adopted to determine the sliding moment and anti-sliding moment for a given circular slip surface. The residual moment is defined as the difference between the sliding moment and the anti-sliding moment. The simple harmony search algorithm is used to locate the dangerous slip surface which has maximum residual moment under a given factor of safety and the given factor of safety is changed in order to find the critical slip surface which is the dangerous slip surface with zero residual moment. For non-circular slip surface, the residual force on the exit point of slip surface substitutes for the residual moment and by the same strategy described for circular slip surface the critical slip surface could be determined. This new method is applied in the slope stability analysis of two typical soil slopes and the comparative studies have shown that this new method is feasible and applicable to slope stability analysis.
