Comparative analysis of medicines with pediatric information in multi-level essential medicine lists

Abstract

Objective: To analyze multi-level essential medicine lists from the perspective of drug accessibility for children. Methods: Medicines with pediatric information in 2013 WHO Model List of Essential Medicines for Children(EMLC), 2012 National Essential Medicines List(NEML) and 2011 Jiangsu Essential Medicine Lists were summarized and compared. Results Conclusion: 2012 NEML can meet the primary demand of pediatric drug use, but lacks some categories and dosage forms specific to children. Government of Jiangsu province can supplement the varieties, forms and specifications suitable for pediatric use on the basis of 2011 Jiangsu Supplementary List and 2013 WHO EMLC and province's medication needs. In addition, pediatric evaluation should be conducted to define pediatric usage and dosage of specific medicines.
