Abstract
Objective To investigate changes in serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and their clinical significance in patients with acute exacerbation of COPD.Methods CRP and WBC were measured in 60 patients with acute exacerbation of COPD and 60 healthy adults, changes in CRP before and after treatment with antibiotics were compared.Results CRP was abnormal in 95% of patients with acute exacerbation of COPD, the rate of abnormal CRP was significantly higher than that of abnormal WBC. After treatment, CRP and WBC decreased significantly, but still higher than those of healthy adults(P0.05).Conclusion CRP is a sensitive marker of infection in patients with COPD and elevated CRP may reflect the severity of acute exacerbation and play an important role in its early recognition and treatment.
