Qualitative study on self-identification of sex orientation and HIV risk behaviors among men who have sex with men(MSM)as university students

Abstract

Objective To understand self-identification of sex orientation and HIV related risk factors among MSM who were studying in universities or academic institutions,and provide basis for future effective intervention.Methods In-depth interviews were conducted with semi-structural questionnaire among 27 MSM from universities and academic institutions.Results Age distribution was from 19 to 29 years.Most of the interviewees were undergraduates or graduates for master degree,and 2 MSM were of national minority.Twenty one MSM were self-identified themselves as homosexual and the other bisexual.All MSM had basic conception of AIDS,however multiple sex partners and'419'behaviors(one night stand)were common.MSM as university students preferred seeking sex partners via the internet.No HIV carriers were found and 2 MSM were newly infected with syphilis.Conclusion HIV risk sexual behaviors are widespread and sexual transmitted diseases are worthy of serious attention.It is necessary to carry out effective intervention among university student MSM.
