Vitrectomy for intra and subretinal foreign body.

Abstract

Objective TO evaluate the efficacy and complication of vitrectomy for intra and subretinal foreign body. Methods 26 case (26 eyes) with intra or subretinal foreign bodies were operated. After vitrectomy,fibrous capsule incision or retinotomy were performed, foreign body was grasped by an intraocular forceps and then removed. Retinotomy was treated with endolaser and C 3F 8 or silicone oil was injected. The success rate of the surgery was recorded. Visual acuity and long term complications were also followed. Results 92.3% of the foreign bodies were successfully removed, 73% eyes obtained visual acuity of better than 0.01, main complications were retinal detachment and failure of foreign body removal. Conclusions Vitrectomy combined with endolaser and tamponade is an effective procedure in the treatment of intra or subretinal foreign body. Because of the damage of the retina at the posterior and other complications.the visual outcome was not so satisfying.
