The evaluation on prevention and treatment of respiratory system complications in anterior cervical spine surgery

Objective To analysis the reasons of respiratory system complications in anterior cervical spine surgery, and summary the prevention and treatment measures. Methods From March 2007 to March 2010, a total of 98 patients with the anterior cervical operation. In these cases, 49 suffered from cervical spondylosis, 12 from cervical disc herniation, 34 from fracture of cervical, 3 from cervical tuberculosis. Results 12 respiratory system complications associated with surgerywere found, with an incidence of 12.24%. Including pulmonary infection in 7(7.14%)), pulmonary infection in 2(2.04%), throat edema in 2(2.04%), breathing stopping in 1(1.02%). Conclusion Respiratory system complications may occur in the anterior cervical spine surgery. Adequate preoperative preparation, thorough understanding of anatomy related to the anterior approach, skilled surgical technique and perfect postoperative management are essential for preventing the respiratory system complications in anterior cervical spine surgery.
