ONDANSETRON FOR THE PREVENTION OF NAUSEA AND VOMITING FOLLOWING PCIA

Abstract

Aim: To investigate the effect of ondansetron of different doses on prevention of nausea and vomiting following PCIA (patient controlled intravenous analgesia) with fentanyl. Ninety ASA class III patients scheduled for abdominal surgery were randomly distributed into three groups to receive fentanyl for PCIA, group I: fentanyl (0.02mg/ml); groupII:fentanyl(0.02mg/ml)+ondansetron(0.04mg/ml); group III: fentanyl(0.02mg/ml)+ondansetron(0.08mg/ml). After completion of surgery the patients were connected to the PCA pump (Graseby9300) via an intravenous line. Total doses administered,total number of demands and total number of delivery were recorded, and the D/D value was calculated. VAS, nausea, vomiting and sedation score were recorded on the first postoperative day. Results: Satisfatory analgesia was achieved in all patients(VAS05).The average sedation score were 02 and no oversedation occured. The incidence and degree of nausea and vomiting: groupIgroupIIgroupIII.The incidence of severe nausea and v omiting in group I was significantly higher than that in group III. There were no differences in doses of fentanyl, PCA duration and degree of satisfaction with PCA in all groups. Four patients complained of dizziness.Phlebits occured in three patients. No respiratory depression,tinnitus and urinary retention were observed.Fentanyl combined with ondansetron for PCIA may decrease incidence and severity of nausea and vomiting. A satisfactory result was obtained at a dose of 0.08 mg/ml of ondensetron.
