On Duan Yucai's Theory of Semantic Extension in the Case of "Xiang" Meaning "Zhi"

Abstract

There have been different opinions on meaning zhi in Shuo Wen Duan Zhu.Duan has quoted the explanation from Mao Chuanyun: means zhi.However,in the two examples given by Duan,xiang in jin yu qi xiang means appearance instead of texture and essence;xiang in kao shen qi xiang means assisting prime minister.Though Duan has a misunderstanding of the character xiang,he has made a great contribution to the research on extension of meaning and its rules.From his further explanation,we can find that Duan has developed his unique explanatory ordinance and formed an internal system.
