Prevalence of hypertension in Uygur,Kazakhs and Han people in rural areas of Xinjiang

Abstract

Objective To study the prevalence of hypertension in Uygur,Kazakhs and Han in rural population of Xinjiang and its risk factors.Methods In Jiashi,Xinyuan,Bortala,Shihezi and Shawan districts of Xinjiang, 10 791people aged 18and over,including 3481Uygur,3922Kazakhs and 3388Han,were surveyed via questionnaire and physical examinations by multi-stage cluster random sampling.The prevalence rates of hypertension in the three peoples were compared.Results The prevalence rates of hypertension in Uygur,Kazakhs and Han were 27.8%,36.7% and 33.9% respectively.Their age-standardized prevalence rates were 29.2%,36.5% and 30.2%respectively.The hypertension prevalence in Kazakhs was higher than in Uygur and Han(P0.05).After gender stratification,the results remained the same.The hypertension prevalence rates in the three ethnic groups all increased with age,BMI and(or)waist circumference with an ascending tendency.Conclusion The prevalence rates of hypertension in the three peoples are higher than the national average,and that in Kazak is higher than those in Han and Uygur.
