Median island tongue flap for reconstruction of the floor of mouth defects

0bjective:To explore the application of the median island tongue flap in the reconstruction of the floor of mouth defects.Method:This case series consists of 5 patients who were reconstructed with a median island myomucosal tongue flap for small and medium sized defects in the floor of mouth.This method involves the creation of a myomucosal island flap from the dorsal median portion of the tongue and transferring it to the floor of the mouth by incision of tongue tip along the midline or through tongue tunnel.Result:The procedures were successful in all patients.All flaps survived.There was no flap necrosis or loss.One patient had partial necrosis of the tip of the tongue.No remarkable disturbances of speech or deglutition were observed in all the patients.Conclusion:The median island tongue flap is a suitable reconstruction option for small and medium sized defects of the floor of mouth.
