Study on quantitative assessment of food security in Shaanxi Province

This study is to assess the status of food security in 11 cities of Shaanxi Province.An integrated index of food security,including the food self-sufficiency rate,per capita share of grain,grain production levels,per capita arable land,fluctuation coefficient in grain production etc is constructed for assessing quantitatively the status of the province's food security by taking the coefficient of food security assessment method.The results show that the food security in Shaanxi was overall safe in the last 10 years,but there are obvious differences in various parts of the province.About three types of food security have been identified,which are based on F-value of food security comprehensive assessment.Xianyang,Weinan and Baoji belong to the food security area;Tongchuan,Yulin and Ankang belong to the critical food safety area;and other regions belong to the basic food security zone.The major factors that have impact on food security in Shaanxi Province include the continuous growth of population,the few land resources,the unbalanced distribution of food production and the worsening environment for food production.A series of measures should be adopted in protecting land resources,improving water conservancy facilities,establishing production bases of grain,storing sufficient grain and establishing food warning system so as to ensure Shaanxi's food security.
