Abstract

Objective To evaluate the value of application of ultrasound-guided Mammotome system in the diagnosis of breast lesions and treatment of breast fibroadenomas. Methods The operations and biopsy for 430 breast lesions in 289 patients were performed by ultrasound guided Mammotome system, and the diagnostic and therapeutic results were evaluated. Results All the operations were successfully accomplished without serious complication. The length of incision was only 3-5mm.In the whole group,397 lesions in 258 patients were diagnosed as breast fibroadenoma and excised by the Mammotome system, and no recurrence was found in 97.9% of patients among after a follow-up of 6 months to 5 years.Clinically suspicious lesions and stage Ⅲ breast cancer were satisfactorilly confirmed by this system. Conclusions The Mammotome system can be used to diagnose all kinds of breast lesions. It is an effective technique with minimal invasion,it can be equally applied for the excision of small breast fibroadenomas, and unnecessary biopsy operations can thus be avoided for other small benign lesions.
