Abstract

The content of free prolin, soluble protein and sugar in flower buds from cytoplasmic male sterile(CMS) lines and their corresponding maintainer lines in tobacco were analyzed. The results showed that the free proline content in the CMS buds were almost equal to that in the maintainer line buds at the small bud stage. However, starting from the mid-size bud stage, the proline content increased rapidly in the maintainer line buds but kept the same in the CMS buds.So the proline content in the CMS buds were much lower than that in the maintainer line buds at the big bud stage. The soluble protein content in the CMS buds was lower than that in the maintainer line buds, and this difference trended to increase along with the bud development. The soluble sugar content in the CMS buds was slightly higher than that in the maintainer line buds at the small and mid-size bud stages. While at the big bud stage, the soluble sugar content in the CMS buds was slightly lower than that in the maintainer line buds.It is suggested that all these differences in substance contents between CMS tobacco and the maintainer line flower buds would be correlated to tobacco male sterility in some extent.
