Abstract

Basic sequence and facies analysis are used widely in the division of marine and continental strata. The Lower Cretaceous Hekou Group in the Minghe Basin is a sequence of complex lithologic units with great thickness. It can be divided into two parts by the color and lithologic features and has been consi deried as a formation for a long time. The Hekou Group has four different kinds of basic sequences, environmental facies, depositional environments and functional facies. All these indicate the results respectively of the stages of basin′s disintegration, development, shrinkage and disappearance. The Hekou Group can be divided into four Formations. The establishment of the Formations offers great convenience for the analysis of the basin. The basic sequence and facies analysis are indispensable for the division of continental strata.
