Abstract

Objective To evaluate long-term prognosis in neonates with convulsion and its related factors. Methods Fifty-six infants with convulsion were studied. All of them received systemic physical examination and intelligence test, and some of them underwent CT and EEG examination. The relationship among prognosis, situation of perinatal , stage and convulsion was explored. Results In all infants, 15 (26.8%) had nervous system sequela. Cerebral palsy developed in four infants, and five (including two infants with cerebral palsy) suffered from epilepsy. Twelve infants had low IQ (three infants with cerebral palsy and one with epilepsy). Neonatal convulsions caused by HIE were significantly different from those caused by other factors (P0. 05). Additionally, prognosis was highly correlated with, convulsion styles, the number of seizure times and seizure duration. Conclusion A high correlation exist between neonatal convulsions' preognosis and its etiology, convulsion styles, the number of seizure times and seizure duration.
