Abstract

Crazy about short prose in the Ming and Qing dynasties, Lin Yu - tang considers it as the source of spirit and soul, Above other modern Chinese writers. The reason for this is closely related with Zhou Zuo - ren's advocating and practice, Lin Yu - tang himself and dissatisfaction with the literary world. The Ming and Qing short prose helps Lin Yu - tang establish his artistic view of life, humor, natu- ral feeling and leisure, consolidating the respect of common sense. His transcending tendency lies in the fullness of modern consciousness, ease, freedom and elegance. His shortcomings are obviously of copying and lacks of deep affection.
