Expression of p21~(WAF1) and p16 in Primary Hepatocellular Carcinoma and its Clinical Significance

Abstract

Purpose] To investigate the relationship between p21WAF1 and p16 expressions in hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) and their significance. [Methods] Expression of p21WAF1 and p16 was detected by immunohistochemical staining in 74 cases with HCC. [Results] Positive rates of p16 were 51.35% in HCC and 100% in normal liver tissues. Positive rates of p21WAF1 were 43.24% in HCCs and 100% in normal livers. The expressions of p21WAF1 and p16 in HCC were lower than those in normal liver specimen(P0.05). The positive rate of p16 was 23.08% in HCCs with metastasis. It was significantly lower than that in HCCs without metastasis(71.43%,P0.05). [Conclusion] The deletion of p16 protein and p21WAF1 protein related to hepatocarcinogenesis, p16 negative HCCs associated with metastasis.
